New Deck Connection and Fastening Guide

Download this Deck Connection and Fastening Guide from Simpson Strongtie. It provides instructions on how to recognize defects and deficiencies in existing decks, and guidance for building strong, safe, long-lasting deck structures. Additionally, it goes detail by detail (ledger connection, joist-to-beam connection, beam-to-post connection, etc.) through a typical deck and identifies the relevant building-code requirements (2018 2021, 2024 IRC/IBC) and connection options.

This deck-code guide can be a helpful reference to any professional contractor or engineer who is just getting acquainted with decks and can also bring you up to speed on revisions to the IRC that may call for engineering changes to even a relatively simple residential deck.

How to Build a Stronger Deck Video Series

There are two main types of deck post base: post-installed bases for existing concrete, and cast-in-place for new concrete.

Properly attaching the ledger to the structure is one of the most important steps in constructing a safe, strong deck.

Deck beams are the horizontal framing members that support the joists.

A deck’s joists are the horizontal framing members that support the decking material.

A deck’s guard posts are the vertical members along the open sides of the deck that connect the handrails to the framing. In order to provide the required 200 lb. load resistance at the handrail, the post must not only be fastened to the rim joist, but also tied back into the joist framing.

Stair stringers need to be properly connected to the deck, and treads properly connected to the stringers, in order to resist loads and perform reliably over time.

Decking materials are typically either wood, or composite or synthetic.

Together fasteners and connectors create a system that ensures the strength of your connections and the safety of your structures.
